About Joseph Ryan — Sports Betting & Casino Expert

I’ve been betting on sports since before it was legal in most of the country. Back when you had to drive to Vegas or set up an offshore account just to put $50 on the Super Bowl, I was doing the math — figuring out why certain lines moved, why some books opened softer than others, and why the majority of casual bettors kept losing money even when they called their picks right.

That obsession turned into over a decade of serious study. I’ve tracked thousands of lines across NFL, NBA, MLB, and college football. I’ve played blackjack with a system and without one (the system is better). I’ve watched the US legal sports betting market go from nothing to a $10 billion industry in five years. And I’ve had accounts at nearly every major US sportsbook and online casino worth mentioning — BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars, PointsBet, BetRivers, Barstool, and more.

SideBets.co is where I put everything I know into plain language. No fluff, no recycled promo copy, no “top 10 casinos” lists that read like they were written by a robot. Just honest analysis of what’s worth your time and money, and what isn’t.

My Background

I grew up in the Midwest watching my dad bet college football the old-fashioned way — newspaper odds, bookies, and a lot of hunches. I went a different direction. I got into odds analysis, probability modeling, and line shopping. When Nevada was still the only legal option, I studied their regulatory framework. When New Jersey legalized in 2018, I had accounts set up within the first month.

I’ve covered the full spectrum: NFL point spreads, NBA totals, MLB run lines, March Madness futures, and everything in between. On the casino side, I’ve put in real hours at blackjack tables (both live and online), tested slot volatility patterns, and spent more time than I care to admit in live dealer lobbies. I know which platforms run rigged-feeling RNG software and which ones have genuinely fair games.

I’m based in the US and only write about books and casinos that are legal and licensed in the states I cover. No offshore recommendations. No gray-area operators.

How I Evaluate Sportsbooks

I don’t give star ratings based on promo codes. Here’s what I actually look for:

  • Line quality and odds: Does this book open competitive lines or are they consistently a half-point worse than the market? I check opening lines against sharp books and track juice levels on standard bets.
  • Payout speed: How fast does money hit your account when you cash out? I’ve tested same-day withdrawals, ACH transfers, and PayPal across every major platform.
  • App and platform UX: Can you find a live bet during a timeout, or does the interface lag and crash? I test on both iOS and Android.
  • Promotions (honestly evaluated): Odds boosts and deposit matches sound great until you read the rollover requirements. I break down what promos are actually worth vs. what’s marketing noise.
  • Customer service: I’ve submitted test tickets to every major operator. Response time and quality vary wildly — I report what I find.
  • Deposit and withdrawal options: Credit cards, ACH, PayPal, Venmo, online banking, crypto. Which platforms support which methods, and what are the real limits and fees.

What I Cover

  • Sports betting: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college football, college basketball, soccer, golf, boxing, MMA
  • Online casinos: Slots (RTP, volatility, hit frequency), blackjack (rule variations, house edge), roulette, live dealer games, video poker
  • State guides: Where online gambling is legal, which operators are licensed, and what the regulatory landscape looks like in each state
  • Strategy: Bankroll management, line shopping, promo abuse (the legal kind), understanding odds formats

My Commitment

SideBets.co earns affiliate revenue when you sign up through links on this site. That doesn’t change my reviews. I’ve turned down partnership deals with operators I don’t think are worth recommending, and I’ve written critical reviews of platforms that would have paid me more to stay quiet.

Every platform listed on this site is legally licensed in its respective states. Every review reflects real testing with real accounts. If that changes, I’ll say so.

Questions or tips? I’m always watching what the market is doing. Good luck out there — and do your homework before you bet.
